Google Instant integration in Chrome already improved -- big time!

I wasn't too impressed with Google's first cut at bringing Google Instant to Chrome. The half-page overlay looked awkward, Google thought I was spamming their servers, and the feature didn't work on local pages like about:memory or chrome:extensions.

Just over two weeks later, however, I'm starting to like what I see. Instant now works with Chrome's about: and chrome: URLs -- about:labs now appears below as soon as I hit the t. Google search results in the Omnibox -- like my query for Full Life Consequences -- are also displayed full-frame now rather than as a half-page overlay.

There's also a folded corner with a clickable 'x,' though I'm not sure I see the point -- clicking it takes focus away from the Omnibox and dumps you back at your previous page.

For a quick video demo, take the jump and see how Chrome Instant handles things in its latest incarnation.

Remember: to try it yourself, you'll need to activate Instant on the about:labs page in Chrome Dev, Canary, or Chromium.

ed note: Dev channel users, give the command line flag --enable-match-preview a shot.

DropMocks is a beautifully simple, HTML5-powered photo sharing site

I'm a big fan of Gmail's HTML5-powered drag-and-drop attachment feature, and I've been waiting to see it pop up in other Web apps. Thanks to Ryan Wagner over at CyberNet, I discovered DropMocks -- an amazingly simple little photo sharing site that offers the same functionality.

Open your pictures folder, select a few images, and drag them onto a DropMocks tab in a supported browser (Firefox 4 or Chrome 6 or 7). Once the upload is complete, you'll receive a short(ish) URL to share with your friends.
Multiple images are supported as well. Drag in five or six favorites, and DropMocks attaches them all to the same URL.

Clicking the previous or next image (or clicking a filename in the navigation box) causes it to slide into focus.

No account is required to use DropMocks, but if you do want to keep tabs on multiple uploads, all you need to do is sign in with your Google account. It's also totally free to use, at least for the time being.

DropMocks is about as easy as it gets when it comes to sharing photos between your desktop and the Web, and it's well worth adding to your bookmarks. It's certainly earned a place in mine.DropMocks is a beautifully simple, HTML5-powered photo sharing site originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 09:10:00 EST. Hands-on with the Samsung Continuum

Innovative screen design is coming to Verizon The Verizon Samsung Fascinate, left, and Continuum, right. Behold, the Verizon Continuum -- aka the Samsung SCH-i400 -- live and in person. It's an as-yet unannounced Android 2.1 phone from Samsung, destined for Verizon, and it's got a few tricks up its sleeve. We knew a few things going into this thanks to a previous leak. So let's start with what we don't know: We don't know when it's coming. But judging by the build quailty, it'll be soon. We don't know how much it'll cost, but you can imagine it'll be in the usual $150-200 price range, after subsidy, of course. And we don't actually have official specs just yet. OK, we've dug up some, and surmised others. But as with things of this nature, specs are subject to change, as are software features, we imagine. So now that we have those bases covered, on to our initial thoughts of the Samsung Continuum!

Epic 4G OTA specifics [From the Forums]

Sprint already announced that they will be rolling out another maintenance release update for the Epic 4G, starting today.  It wasn't too long ago that we saw an update, so it's good to see Sprint staying on the ball with this one.  As promised, Sprint has released the change log (after the break) and it looks good.  Most major concerns are being addressed, and hopefully everyone can get back to enjoying their Epic 4G's instead of fighting the bugs.  Any of you guys got your OTA yet?  Sing out in the Epic 4G forums! Bookmarklet lets you destroy Web pages one element at a time, Asteroids style!

AdBlock is so lame. I mean, all it does it prevent ads from being displayed on Web pages. Where's the sport? Where are the explosions? I want some satisfaction from my advert eradication! Satisfaction like the kind you can only find in vintage arcade games.

Thankfully there's this incredibly practical bookmarklet that turns any website into a search-and-destroy mission. Click your button, and the ship appears. You're then free to fly around and blast any element to pieces. So long, Eric Schmidt! Take that, Evony banner!

And no, I don't actually expect anyone to replace AdBlock with this. At least not until it comes with its own retro soundtrack and pew-pew noises...

Sprint getting the Samsung Transform, another Galaxy S phone?

The Samsung Transform has surfaced in a picture that displays some of Sprint's upcoming phones. Little to no information has been released relating to the Transform, which is intriguing enough. To make the leak more interesting, however, the device looks exactly like the recently released Epic 4G. Sprint is the only U.S. carrier to release its version of the Samsung Galaxy S with a QWERTY keyboard, so perhaps it wants to release a touchscreen-only option? The timing seems strange, but we'll keep our ears open. Until then, anyone's guess is as good as ours as to possible specs and potential release date of the Transform.Oh, by the way, there's another look at the Kyocera/Sanyo Zio with Sprint branding that we first showed you at Radio Shack. HP: homebrew apps for webOS are OK with us!

Filed under: webOSOne thing I love about my Palm Pre is that I'm able to run homebrew apps without performing any firmware surgery on it. Thanks to Preware (et al) the apps are easy to find, easy to install, and a select few, like Internalz, have become some of my most-used.

I'm not the only one who seems to like homebrew apps. HP, it turns out, thinks they're pretty cool, too. They agree with a recent post from Palm's Tim Stiffler-Dean that there are great apps to be had from sources other than the App Catalog. So, where else can you look for your next favorite webOS app? Check out PreCentral's App Gallery, appSpotlight, and appScoop (which contains beta apps that Palm doesn't push to the App Catalog).

I can't imagine Apple ever singing the praises of an app that's only available in Cydia, can you?

Amazon unveils Kindle for the Web

You can already read Kindle books on a whole host of devices besides the Kindle itself -- like your iPhone, Blackbery, Android device, PC, or Mac -- but Amazon's not stopping there. The mammoth ebook seller has unveiled Kindle for the web, an embeddable reader which is capable of displaying book samples right in your browser. In my testing, however, I didn't have much luck -- I tried to embed every "Look Inside" book by George Carlin after the break, but wound up having to use Amazon's example instead.

As Mobiputing's Brad Linder pointed out to me, this could eventually lead to an Amazon Video On Demand-type setup for Kindle: "stream" books to your browser via the viewer, or cache them via HTML5's localstorage element for offline reading. Hey, the Web is the platform, right? Why bother developing dedicated apps for a slew of different devices if you can cleverly code a single Web app which does the job just as well?

Take a look at the embed code in action after the break -- it's a lot like a Google Docs Viewer or Scribd embed. Kindle for the Web currently bears the beta tag, so you might not see it on many Kindle books as you browser Amazon's shelves.

Chrome AdBlock dev pushes reassuring note to counter Chrome's scary extension warnings

The fact that Google Chrome supports extensions is great, but there's one thing I'd like tweaked: those somewhat-frightening messages Chrome displays about an extension's API access.

For example, there's Typing Speed Monitor, which I recently posted. When you install it, you'll receive the following alerts:

...which certainly might look scary to the average user. TSM's developer happened to stop by and post a comment to allay those fears, stating that the alerts appear "because the extension needs to use the chrome.tab.* API (which gives it access to the URLs you visit) and it needs to use 'content_scripts,' which are injected into HTML pages and can manipulate their DOM elements."

There's nothing to fear, however, because your data isn't going anywhere: "[Typing Speed Monitor] can't give that data to anyone else because it doesn't have permission to access other hosts."

Still, the alerts are off-putting and even give more seasoned surfers cold feet when installing an extension -- which is where the alert above comes in. Michael Gundlach, who maintains AdBlock for Chrome, used Chrome's extension update support to push a reassuring note to its users about an upcoming change.

I've seen the "requires more permissions" alert before from an extension, but I haven't seen a dev take the time to explain to users what's going on. It's a smart, thoughtful move by Gundlach. Until Chrome offers more insightful (and accurate) alerts, developers might want to follow this example to avoid accidentally scaring their users.Chrome AdBlock dev pushes reassuring note to counter Chrome's scary extension warnings originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 26 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. Hotmail update brings Facebook chat, video integration, more

The last few months have been busy ones for the Hotmail crew, and they're continuing to push new features to their users. The latest round of upgrades includes enhanced folder options, built-in package tracking, embedded video playback, and a rather significant upgrade to Messenger.

Hotmail users can now chat with their Facebook friends from the comfort of their inbox -- if I had my druthers, I'd pick Facebook integration instead of AIM in Gmail. As for the package tracking, detailed information will be presented right below any FedEx tracking IDs while DHL and UPS will be linked to the appropriate tracking pages on their respective sites.

The massive photo attachment update which rolled out in the U.S. has now gone global, giving all Hotmail users the ability to include up to 10GB of photos per email. [ed note -- do any of you send that many photos in a single message? Cripes!]

Two new sites have also been added to Hotmail's built-in playback feature: Justin.tv and Dailymotion. Organization buffs, Microsoft hasn't forgotten about you -- you can now create sub-folders to aid in your quest for the perfectly-arranged inbox!

Microsoft is clearly focused on keeping Hotmail as competitive as possible, and it will be interesting to see what features the next round of updates brings.

McAfee launches a -- yawn -- short URL service

McAfee has decided to get in to the short URL game. Why? Possibly because they were looking for an additional reason for techies to loathe them -- if there's one thing more hated than craptacular software, it's yet another URL truncator.

The theory is that people will use McAfee's short URL service because the links are managed by a trusted recognized security company. I'll say this for mcaf.ee: their landing page sure is salmon-colored. Beyond that, this is just another ho-hum link shortener -- they're not even the first provider to offer "safe" links. Bit.ly has been working with Websense and Sophos since late last year.

I don't know about you, but if I was McAfee, I'd be more concerned about making sure my next definition update didn't brick corporate computers. Or maybe I'd work a little harder to ensure my security suite actually gets certified by AV-Test -- you know, like Webroot managed to do.

ed note: I'm guessing they mean "blacklist," not "blackist." For example, there's Typing Speed Monitor, which I recently posted.
